DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS

Come and train in one of our bakeries

If you are an adult with a learning difference looking for purpose and friends, Step and Stone can help. Our bakeries are a great place to learn work skills, meet new people and find out more about working. When you are ready to work, and if you want a job, we will help you find one. We provide support when you start and for as long as you need it.

EXTENDing OPPORTUNITIES

At Step and Stone, the Bristol bakery is just the beginning. Alongside the practical skills our trainees develop on the kitchen floor, our Extending Learning Programme offers something equally valuable: the space to dream bigger. In smaller, more intimate groups, trainees explore the world of work — what’s out there, what’s possible, and where they might want to go. They visit real workplaces, meet people doing real jobs, and start to build a picture of their own future.

These sessions are also where some of the quieter magic happens. Away from the bustle of the bakery, trainees form genuine friendships, grow in confidence, and practise the social skills that matter just as much as any technical ability. It’s about more than employment — it’s about belonging, aspiration, and knowing that a fulfilling working life is within reach.

We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a fulfilling life and that includes the chance to work for those who want to.

Step and Stone is not just a bakery. It is also an organisation that provides a trainee programme that helps adults with learning disabilities build work skills and confidence. We work with our trainees to discover their individual career interests and goals, and to source work experience and job opportunities that would be suitable for them.

Step and Stone have been an outstanding contractor on the We Work for Everyone project, bringing specialist employability support to people with learning disabilities and autism in a way that is both deeply person‑centred and profoundly impactful.

Their Bristol‑based bakery—where they produce handmade lavosh flatbreads—operates with a clear social purpose. As a community interest company, Step and Stone reinvest all profits directly back into the bakery, ensuring long‑term sustainability and continued opportunities for the young people they support.

Through structured training, hands‑on work experience, and compassionate guidance, Step and Stone help young people with learning disabilities develop practical skills, workplace behaviours, and confidence. Their approach aligns perfectly with the goals of the We Work for Everyone project, enabling participants to grow their independence and take meaningful steps toward paid employment.

The commitment, creativity, and expertise shown by the Step and Stone team have significantly enhanced our project delivery. Their ability to provide real‑world work opportunities—within a supportive, inclusive environment—has made a measurable difference to participants’ outcomes and aspirations. They are not just a contractor, but a trusted partner whose values and impact resonate strongly with our mission.

We are proud to work alongside Step and Stone and deeply value the contribution they make to improving employment opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autism across the region.
